Lymphoma Action

Technical Drupal 8 website build with advanced events map

How we helped

The challenge

Lymphoma Action’s website is a resource hub in the truest sense, providing a wealth of information for patients, their families and healthcare professionals alike. Their old site had become overloaded, confusing users right at the point they needed support most. The organisation was rebranding, so the new site needed to support this wider communications campaign in the best possible way.

The brief

Lymphoma Action pinpointed several key areas of improvement for the new site, namely bringing the right information to the right users in the simplest, most efficient way, and showcasing real stories. The organisation runs a great deal of events, but these were currently listed in a very unengaging way, so we were tasked with building a complex, user-friendly map and events listing for them. Another key area for improvement was the display of third-party clinical trials, which required complex technical work.

Lymphoma Action’s new homepage is uncluttered and focused on helping users get support quickly and easily.

Our solutions

Our UX research confirmed that users were finding it hard to locate information that was specific and relevant to them. On consultation with Lymphoma Action, we divided their service users into six distinct categories and added a prominent “find support” widget on the homepage. This allows site visitors in the most need to quickly select their situation and move through to specific pages without distractions.

Once a user clicks through to a specific landing page, the information they might need is further divided into clear categories. For example, if you are “worried about Lymphoma” you have a choice of symptoms, tests and waiting for test results.

The new site’s events map is highly complex, with functionality to archive past events, allow events by other organisations to be listed and incorporate tiered event types. Users can search by postcode and sort by date and distance. We added a legend for event types so that users easily know what the different pin colours mean. Selecting an event type updates the map and the events listed below. Clicking an event itself will bring up a navigable map, the address and GPS coordinates.

Lymphoma Action’s new map is highly functional, while retaining a clean and elegant design.

Another key piece of functionality on the new site is the database of searchable clinical trials. Trials can have multiple parameters and up to 30 locations, so our task was to present this information without it being overwhelming – particularly important as some users might be in a state of anxiety or even panic when searching the database.

We created a clear, consistent taxonomy for the filters and designed specific landing pages for each trial that are highly SEO optimised. Our design went through rigorous testing and QA to make it as user-friendly as possible, with additional features like the “supporting you” tab to make sure that users know that help is always there if they need it.
