We're proud to sponsor the National Historic Ships UK Photography Competition once again this year.

The much-loved National Historic Ships UK Photography Competition is back for its 16th year – and Fat Beehive is delighted to return as one of the official sponsors for 2025.

This year’s theme, “Craft & Crew,” invites photographers to celebrate the historic vessels and the people who sail, maintain and restore them. Whether afloat or ashore, the competition is looking for striking images that capture the enduring beauty of traditional maritime craftsmanship and the crews who keep it alive.

From dramatic shots of classic rigs to quiet moments of restoration work in a shipyard, entries are encouraged to explore the full breadth of Britain’s maritime heritage. With thousands of miles of coastline and navigable inland waterways to choose from – not to mention events like May’s Return to Dunkirk, commemorating 85 years since Operation Dynamo – there’s no shortage of inspiration.

Competition Categories

Alongside the overall ‘Craft & Crew’ winner, this year’s categories include:

  • The True Classic Award – celebrating timeless sailing imagery
  • Newcomer of the Year – for the best submission by a first-time entrant
  • The People’s Choice Award – run via Instagram, with monthly winners selected by public vote from May through August, leading to a grand final in September

Winning images will feature in the 2026 National Historic Ships UK Calendar, Classic Boat magazine, and an exhibition at The Historic Dockyard Chatham – as well as appearing in the charity’s Annual Review.

Judging and Submissions

The judging panel will be looking for creativity, technical excellence, and originality in response to the theme. Whether snapped on a smartphone, camera or drone, every image will be judged on its ability to tell a story and evoke the spirit of our maritime past.

Winners will be announced in November 2025 via the annual National Historic Ships Awards film, premiering on YouTube.

At Fat Beehive, we’re proud to support organisations that celebrate our cultural and historic heritage, and are delighted that Tom Moreton, our Chief Client Officer, is one of this year’s judges.

Good luck to everyone entering this year – we can’t wait to see the results!
